Math Lessons Grade Summary
Comparing Units of Measurement 4th Through discussion, a story, and an art project, students will learn about the significance of the buffalo in the lives of Native Americans.
Graphing Native American Demographics in the School 4th In this activity, students will design a survey and collect data on the tribal demographics within their school’s population. They will then tabulate their results and graph their findings.
Problem Solving Practice Sheets featuring Tribal Entities 4th In this lesson, students practice solving story problems using problems developed around actual tribal employees in the context of doing their work. Various math concepts blocks are addressed.
Temperature in a Cultural Context 4th In this integrated math/science/social studies lesson, students employ research and the creation of a teaching poster to explore the effects of temperature on Native American lifestyle and culture.
Science Lessons   Summary

Buffalo

Required Materials

K & 1st Through discussion, a story, and an art project, students will learn about the significance of the buffalo in the lives of Native Americans.
Drums and Sound K & 1st Through discussion, demonstration, and observation of performances by drum groups, students learn how vibrations create sounds.

Moon (Na tin nik)

Required Materials

K - 4th Students will learn scientific facts about the Moon and how some American Indian Tribes used the moon to measure time. The Salish word for moon, time, and sun are the same. They will accomplish this by listening to stories and poetry, writing stories, communicating with an astronaut, performing experiments and utilizing the Internet.
Parent and Baby Lookalikes K & 1st Through discussion, listening to a Salish story, looking at pictures, and creating artwork, students will learn about baby animals, their special names and the vocabulary to describe their relative sizes. They will also learn about the significance of animals in the lives of Native Americans.
Plants and Roots 3rd & 4th In this lesson, students will discuss the parts of the plant and perform an experiment in which they observe a plant’s water transportation system. Students will become familiar with several local plants used for utilitarian purposes.
Rock Eater 3rd & 4th In this lesson students will examine the effects of acid rain by performing a simulation experiment. They will also view the effects of acid rain on the reservation.
The Sun and Moon K & 1st Through discussion, looking at pictures, listening to Native American stories, observing, and building models, students will understand basic concepts about Earth, the Sun and the Moon, such as relative movement, the phases of the moon, etc. They will also learn about a traditional Native American calendar based on the lunar cycle.
Weather and Seasons K & 1st Through discussion and looking at pictures, students will examine the seasons and seasonal activities, including the Salish months and traditional Salish activities for each month. They will also discover why certain activities are done at the same time each year.
